1. »  Marijuana Smokers Are Skinnier Than Everyone Else

    ​Forget marijuana — medical or otherwise — as a performance-enhancer for such accolades as“winner” of the Chubby Bunny competition. Consider the magic plant, instead, as a partner in weight loss. 

    That’s right, pard: the antimunchies. Or at least the antifatties. 

    Americans who don’t use marijuana are more likely than cannabis users to be obese, according to a study conducted by two French scientists, recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Using data collected by previous investigations, the authors of “Obesity and Cannabis Use” found that folks who smoked cannabis three times a week were about 50 percent less likely to be dangerously overweight (22 percent of nonsmokers were obese, compared to 14 percent of smokers).

When Law & Order: Criminal Intent started cutting back the number of episodes in which Detective Robert Goren appears, I not only lost interest in that particular offshoot of the Law & Order franchise, but in the franchise as a whole. Yes, I still watch reruns of Law & Order here and there when I come across them on TV, but I never watched Law & Order: Criminal Intent reruns because I was afraid I’d turn on an episode with Chris Noth or — God help me — Jeff Goldblum and flip out because it wasn’t Vincent D’Onofrio as Detective Goren. Fortunately, USA Network announced yesterday that Law & Order: Criminal Intent has been renewed for one final season and, even more importantly, that Vincent D’Onofrio will be returning to the cast for this tenth and final eight-episode season. I have to admit that eight episodes seems like a pretty lame attempt at a final season, but as long as D’Onofrio is back as Det. Goren they could air a four-episode final season and I’d be satisfied. Of course, the return of Detective Goren won’t be complete without his partner, Detective Alexandra Eames, so it’s good news that USA Network is in discussions with Kathryn Erbe to return as Eames, and even better news that Jeff Goldblum has moved on to other projects and reportedly will not return to Law & Order: Criminal Intent. I know nothing about NASCAR and even less about personal seating designed to enhance the video game-playing experience, but I’m still really excited about the upcoming release of a NASCAR licensed #11 Denny Hamlin “FedEx” Racing Seat (say that five times fast) by Playseat, an international gaming furniture manufacturer, on October 1st. The seat features NASCAR, Joe Gibbs, and FedEx branding, as well as a really cool black and orange color scheme perfect for an October release.   4. Two days ago, Quirk Books released the official trailer for one of its most imaginative mash-up novels yet: Night of the Living Trekkies, by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall. Personally, I’ve never seen the point of releasing trailers for books; after all, books are something you read, while trailers are something you watch. Yet in a day and age when novels are cinematically adapted left and right, sometimes even before they’re published, and movies and television shows frequently spawn series of novels, the book trailer prevails.

    Unlike the majority of the book trailers that I’ve seen in the past, the trailer for Night of the Living Trekkies not only features relatively impressive production values, but also is extremely entertaining to watch. Of course, I’m a die-hard zombie movie fan, so I’ll leave it to you to decide for yourselves what you think of Quirk Books’ official trailer for Night of the Living Trekkies. The film is a collaboration that involves Polish artist and animator Tomek Baginski, best known for his Oscar-nominated short film Cathedral, and the Polish film studio Platige Image, on behalf of the Warsaw Uprising Museum.
